We've been enjoying country living for just over a month now, so I thought I would update as to how we are all adjusting. I say "enjoying" and I meant that. I think we are all having a great time so far.
It is very quiet here. How quiet it is gives a new meaning to the word, really. After living in the burbs, where we had to contend with a bazillion kids, our neighbours mid-life crisis mobile (aka Harley at 7am every day, including Sunday!) and teens with nothing to do at 1am, I can tell you this is very much welcome.
Since we are 7km from town and only about 15 km from a "bigger" town, I don't feel isolated yet. That might change when there's snow (but that's what we bought the 4x4 Suburban for, right?). It takes me all of 10-15 minutes to get to the grocery store. Not much more than it did where we were before because the main street was just crazy busy all the time.
We're actually saving quite a bit of money not being within arm's reach of everything. I don't run to the grocery store for just one thing and come out spending $50, which I used to do 3 times a week and do actual groceries. Now I go once a week, buy enough of everything and don't have to worry about it. I have a massive pantry, so my Costco runs are very fruitful now that I have a bunch of room to store stuff. It's hard to see it there in the pic, but it's just beyond that door. Witness:
The other plus side, and I am not sure if I mentioned this, we came from a 2200 square foot house. 6 people and 1 growing business (it's more like fungus really at the rate it spread), made it just too small. Weird layout too. This house is (and bear with me) just over 6000 square feet. Now hold on! Let me explain! It's two houses in one, essentially. We basically built a 3000 square foot addition onto a century house. It's hard to explain unless you've seen it - but when you add the old house, new house and basement, you come up with a massive rambler that has more than enough room. Every bedroom has it's own walk-in closet and bathroom. That might sound like a big PITA, but it's not that bad. The girls clean their bathroom and I take care of ours, Alex & Meg's and the one we use for guests. The others are not in use, so I don't have any more toilets to clean than I did before.
Putting the girls in soccer in this town early was a brilliant idea as the girls both know quite a few kids going to their school. This makes them both excited as they've been told that the new girl is instantly a hit. If I was them I would be terrified of living up to that expectation, but they're 7 and 8, so totally oblivious to the pressure. School starts in 10 days and they're stoked. Meghan's entry is staggered, but she is thrilled to be starting JK and going on the big bus with the girls (did I mention that K is full day here in the country?!).
There are a couple of down sides, that I would prefer not to discuss in too much detail. Most of them involving family and boundaries. This house was the hub for the family for a long time and I am just not into having everyone around all the time as they please. That says enough about that for now.
And so, I will close my update saying that I am very happy in our new digs and looking forward to a gorgeous Fall. It's even more beautiful here then!
